The network was initiated in August 2024 and officially established following the Senate approval granted by the University of Ruhuna (UOR) in February 2025. It was officially launched at the Annual Academic Sessions of Faculty of Medicine, UOR in May 2025, in collaboration with the Universities of Peradeniya and Jaffna. The network’s membership approval was granted by the University Grant Commission (UGC), Sri Lanka in April 2026.
The SLOHUN is a pioneering national initiative bringing universities together to advance a unified One Health vision for Sri Lanka. By promoting multidisciplinary research and capacity building at the human, animal, and environmental interface, SLOHUN aims to address emerging health challenges sustainably.
Objectives of the Network:
A leading country network in promoting One Health approaches to face future global health challenges and to develop sustainable health of humans, animals and the ecosystem.
To develop a long-lasting university network through the expansion of universities and other institutions to advance the One Health workforce and to promote One Health approaches by developing research projects, conducting training and performing community service activities.
Conducting collaborative research on one health concept.
Providing one health-related training and workshop for different professionals and students.
Providing educational programmes for relevant professionals and students.
Increasing capacities towards one health research, diagnostic in relevant professionals, and students.
